All Markets tomorrow ;)

We've got fresh Basil coming!! More Heirloom Tomatoes for EBW (and a few Peas and Broccoli) Garlic, Sweet Onions, Beets, Swiss Chard, fresh cut Cabbages, New Potatoes too! Oh, and tons of Kale! Green Beans start next week! Besides being SO DRY, I am enjoying harvest this year! See you at market! ;)

September is Pepper month!

Pepper, like tomatoes are doing well for us this season.  They thrive in this heat and we were fortunate to set up and run drip irrigation with all the pepper patches.  The plants are heavy with peppers and our goal was sweet red, reds and more reds! We have red shepherds, red bells and red pimentos.  All are so sweet when high red and yummy straight up, roasted, grilled, pan fried.... ah I love this time of year. Sweet Corn was almost a bust this year!  F-ing deer and raccoons made a hell-o of a mess back there. Very depressing....BUT the second patch was left alone.  huh.  Ben thinks they just moved on. So more yummy, sweet NO GMO, sprayed with absolutely nothing organic sweet corn at all markets for a while! And a quick selfie with baby Jonah and I checking out the wagon of beefsteaks which have also been amazing this season! We are still taking orders for Romas by the way! Suckering and Stringing Heirloom Tomatoes

  Beautiful Sunday in the greenhouse!  I have promised one of my Evergreen Brickworks customers that I would blog and teach her how to sucker her tomatoes! She has been sharing pictures off her iPhone with me of her tomatoes at market and asking how to 'sucker them' Don't you just love iPhones?  This blog is for you! Once tomatoes root down and take hold, they grow like weeds! Suckering (pruning) is an important job that has to be done early and often to have 'controlled' plants and healthy, large fruit.   It's one of those jobs that you finally finish and then have to turn around and do it all over again.  If you have a large garden, leave one tomato plant alone and watch it all season!  The beast will lop over, suckers will make a huge pile of a vine mass, blossoms and eventually oodles of fruit, the stem will throw roots and it will keep going and going!  That is what we often do in the fields.  This works fine IF the weather is hot and dry ...

Strawberries for 2012....

We really missed not having our own strawberries at market this past June!  We are making sure that doesn't happen next year! Folks really missed our organic berries!  This is the process so that we have them for June 2012: These is a bundle of root stock we got in from Nova Scotia this year.  Gorgeous plants, top quality.  Two new varieties this year.  Winter hardy, sweet and plentiful.  We shall see!   Our land makes all the difference I'm certain! Ben pulling the clip planter.  Because of the quality of the Strawberry plants we planted 3 times as much as we had before! Domingo and Manuel using the clip planter to plant the Strawberry plants.  I didn't think it would work, but was surprised to see the success.  This due to excellent plant quality.
