I love Siberia.

Image
You live in Canada.  It's cold and snowy in the winter. Suck it up.  If I have one more person whine to me about the cold temps I'm going to pile drive their face into one of the many snow piles here on the farm. It's annoying that I can't fire the greenhouse because it's -25 at night. Burning that kind of oil is just not wise. So we wait.  In the meantime I grow a bit under grow lights indoors. The truth is that I have been stressing out as I LOVE an early jump start on the season.   The edge on early veg, but this year it's just at a standstill.  Our bottom line is dependant on these crops and seeding on time is important.  So ok, it you make your living by the weather like I do you can whine to me about this Siberian weather! I am once again trying to be calm and smile like Ben. He's the dude. He drove by me while I was in the office with the whole greenhouse furnace on the forks of the tractor. He was just grinning. He knew I would freak out that he...

Skinny Borscht

Image
It’s almost a crime to make this recipe and not add the ham bone/pork hock but I’m going vegan and skinny here. I can add flavor to almost fool Ben (yet he still stirs around looking for the meat). We just eat a lot of meat to begin with, so anywhere I can skimp – I’m going to!  Time for more veggies.  This is a soup you can totally pig out on and not feel guilty.  I am working my butt off to lose weight these days and I know that I need a caloric deficit at the end of the day and with the amount of physical activity I can get in these days, a veggie soup is most welcome! Alas, I am not one of those mothers with young children that can afford to go and blow 20K on the surgical removal of belly flab and tightening me up (don’t get me started).  A nice kick in the ass feels amazing to get moving hard every. single. day. Right Tanya Fraser ? Ha. I’m finding new muscles every day I didn’t know existed with some really cool strength training! When you own a farm you don...

2015 is going to rock!

Image
I know for sure that 2015 is going to rock! Ben and my babies make me smile constantly. I've also made quick friends with a holistic nutritionist by the name of Tanya Fraser.  She is super inspiring and looks at your life as a whole. She is also a personal trainer. I would highly recommend adding a holistic nutritionist to your life. Support what these pros do. Tanya has just recently started a podcast as well. Surrounding yourself with HAPPY awesome people is enriching for the soul!  Banish the negative, poisonous, drama-damned people (especially when they come in the form of family members - they can be the worse!) Add to that a diet rich with the best wholesome foods and plenty of fresh air and exercise, and life can be very, very sweet! Speaking of sweet, my newest passion is brewing my own Kombucha. I attended a class by Tanya and brought home my first scoby culture and have created a mass set up of jars and ideas for flavourings.  I use a really good green tea...

January on the farm

Going into 2015 with high hopes here! We've secured a decent amount of storage crops, especially some really great carrots!  If you don't juice, you really should look into it.  I juice because of the way it makes me feel. Health has become very important to Ben and I and our diet is changing to make way for a lot more veg.  Fresh, raw veg makes me feel an amazing natural high.  I've been juicing for quite a few years now and it's nice to see the 'trend' catching on more and more each year. We've got beautiful juice carrots in stock.  Email us if you want to pick some up at Evergreen Brickworks Market or starting in February/March at Dufferin Grove again. I've been juicing carrots, pears and ginger.  Wow is all I can say. For the next few months we will continue to offer Onions, Potatoes, Carrots and Cabbage. Buttery Fingerlings, red Potatoes; huge hot Cooking Onions; crisp sweet Cabbages; rainbow and regular sweet orange Carrots.  Even some beet...

December and January Winter Staples!

The winter looks great for storage crops this year! Look to us when you need yellow fleshed buttery French Fingerling Potatoes, Sweet Carrots for stews or fresh eating; juice Carrots in any quantity you require for all your energy juicing needs; Cabbages for braising, slaw, home made sauerkraut etc. We've got Red and Savoy Cabbages this winter too.  Punchy huge Cooking Onions and Beets too! No prepared foods this year as you all should know by now :)  My 20 month old daughter and 1 month old son stopped food production in its tracks for one good year. Our veggie operation will remain full steam and expand but my other baby (food prep) is on hold very temporary. I am typing this entry with one hand as I hold a fussy Nate and Sadie naps. My new job of being the mother is top priority for me and I'm loving every minute. Ben remarked yesterday how he wished Sadie could stay a year and a half old forever. She's so cute and amazing and growing way too fast... Being with her ful...

What we have available this November

Ahh the sweet little whisps of snow that get your butt in gear firing up the wood stove and prepping yourself for the winter harvest!  We've had both little kids in the barn with us today while we graded for Saturday's market and all went pretty good.  Warm in the shop so our 19 month old runs around, .... and our 2 week old son sleeps soundly all bundled in his stroller by the wood stove.  Really nice to be able to work with the kids around. We are still field harvesting a lot of crops.  Fresh from the fields we have Cauliflower, Kale, Celeriac, bunched Carrots, Brussel Sprouts, perhaps some Swiss Chard (not really a priority and it's getting old) and Broccoli! From storage we have Rainbow Carrots, Juice Carrots (the uglies), Beets, Potatoes, Cabbage and Onions.    Our Cabbage storage is looking nice. We've got Reds, Winter Greens and the above sassy Savoy's too! Carrots are just incredible. All that rain really allowed them to germina...
